Been having a bit of a chat over lunch. We have half a dozen firms covering a small area. Most of the solicitors are connected to firms dealing with other areas. A few of us would consider moving into one building to work under a chambers arrangement. I'm not sure what to think yet as this could work for me as I'm doing more than my fair share but could court cover ever be done properly (if it's every man for himself).
Does anyone have any experience of this and any advice. The billing is also an issue. Could we claim under one contract would we need to bill seperately? Would we each need insurance or could we make a joint application which would be cheaper? Would a joint typing pool be barred because of conflicts (one of the main reasons for considering a chambers set up rather than a partnership in such a small town).
Interesting idea. You would run into conflict problems if you operated as one entity. There would be nothing stopping you from operating out of the same premises so long as you could demonstrate that adequate precautions are taken to avoid breaches of confidentiality.
If you set up the typing pool as a separate company with contracts with the separate entities (providing for confidentiality, for example) then I do not forsee a problem with using pooled resources. After all different law firms can use the same outsourcing company.
The bigger question is why. In my experience the biggest overhead for firms is the solicitors' salary bill. In the sticks commercial property is not too expensive. Also think of all those egos under one roof. Ouch.
I am not sure whether the universe has yet travelled far enough since the Big Bang to be ready for this concept however holistically satisfying it might be from the 'inside'.
Or to put it more simply - won't your customers be suspicious of a huddle of lawyers together who 'say' they are operating different and independent firms?
